I have seen most of sparrow nests in Chhapara(jhopadi which used to open from at least two sides and these jhopadi's are made up of tall grasses found in Ghambhiri river(seasonal stream) bed passes nearby my village). Sparrows here were in very good condition, only predators to their eggs were crow, snakes or lizards(chhipakali). Out of their 2-3 eggs survival chances were around 90%. Humans were very friendly to them, They used put some water near to there nests and some pieces of bread. Usually female sparrows goes for food item to the newly born sparrows. Apart form bread pieces these sparrow eat insects mainly. About the present condition of sparrows and the effect of telecommunication infrastructure if any, I would only be able to post after my next visit possibly in oct,2012 first week.

I put water and millet (bajra) seeds out on my boundary wall for birds everyday. Sparrows came in large numbers. But they started to reduce in number, and approx in 2010 just vanished. In their place, a new larger bird of brown color and somewhat spherical body, with notable yellow eyes and a noisy chirp started to come (not the common Myna, that came before and continues to come now). However, after the Delhi High Court order banning illegal mobile phone towers, I noticed my cellphone signals (Vodafone and Reliance) went quite weak. Along with that, sparrows also started to increase slowly. Now they are almost as much as before. The larger brown bird also comes, though in smaller numbers and frequency.
Also, I greatly appreciate the BNHS taking such a citizen-involving initiative. More power to you.

Recently about 2 month ago , i saw a nest on Kadambh tree in my verandah . some years back there use to be a about 10-20 nests on holes or cracks in my home. but now i do not fine none. About more than 5 years ago , i use to notice a group of more than 100 sparrow birds use to circle in evening in sky before they go to sleep in a tree near my home .
but now i dont find much..sometimes do fine 10-15 ...
Now i also noticed other birds like bulbul & tailorbird in my verandah tree , but before i nevernoticed these birds.
I also noticed one other bird (looks like Brown rock chat) up to 5 numbers living near my area ..and also noticed these birds chasing sparrows .

Nishant - Basapura Bangalore Karnataka

I live in an apartment and have a garden in my balcony. I see sparrows and few other small birds almost 2-3 times in a month. There are lot of construction going on and I feel sparrows are not feeling comfortable. is there a way I can invite them so that they cam make my garden their permanent home.
Thanks

sadiya - a garage near panigate,an urban slum Yakutpura Vadodara Gujarat

on the morning of 14th august,at 9:15 am i went to a garage in panigate to get my activa repaired.what i observed that there were two trees in front of the garage,a rare sight in a place as congested as the old city area!! my activa was repaired and i reversed to leave.on my way out, i had to apply brakes suddenly as there were 2 sparrows on the ground...one of these sparrows was a baby bird, yery stubborn baby sparrow not ready to move!!! while i drove away , i saw another tree a few metres away from where i saw these birds, however i did not stop to look for any nests...my maid lives there, she happened to tell me once about a survey being done in her area regarding a mobie tower in their locality and its ill effects on them....its kind of an urban slum.. i happen to live naround 100 metres from this place where i saw the sparrows, but i haven't seen a single sparrow in so many years in my area..a few years ago, there used to be a tree in front of my house and one could hear chirping of birds daylong..some sparrows even paid me occassional visits in my room!! however that tree was cut a few years ago and ever since no sparrows are in sight anymore! i am no expert of birds, but , just wanted to help by giving this very little and possibly trivial piece of information ..thank you!
