After reading about the decline of House Sparrows we realized that the birds had infact vanished. So we started feeding the birds over the weekends. I have ten small flower pots placed on the wall of the balcony. These are hidden by some tall plants. We place rice and bajra in all the pots. At first there were no sign of life . After a month a bulbul made a nest and had little chicks. Other bulbuls came to visit them . Infact the birds were quite daring- sitting around in the nest while we had tea. That's when the sparrows started coming in too. Now I see about five everyday. They love hopping along from one pot to another. They fly back to a beautiful climber in the house opposite ours.
My kids in school participated enthusiastically in the World Sparrow Day which I organised as part of the environment activity...spreading awareness and feeding the birds. Personal pictures can be sent . Others on approval by the school authorities.

Our house is located in a tea estate and there is a moderate expanse of agricultural land also. Fortunately, it has not been touched by the wrath of urbanisation. We see sparrows every single day. There are two sparrows that hop inside our house everyday looking for food. Since all of us are away from our home, my mother has grown very fond of the little sparrows. She gets upset every time we talk about the declining number of sparrows. If there is anything our family can do to save the few remaining in our area, we would immediately put in our efforts.

We have sparrows making nests in our home at least once every year and a couple lives there until it lays eggs and the babies grow up. Then the nest is abandoned for another 6-8 months.
