Since childhood i have always admired birds and since 50 years i have been making a small cardboard box nest for the sparrows. I used to leave rags of jute or gunny sacs so that the sparrows could pick it up and use it as a nesting material. Today it has been 25 years since I started the Orphanage home at Hosur and I still make the cardboard boxes for the little sparrows and paint on them so that the nest has windows and doors and fix them at different corners. I have seen sparrows using these make-shift nests and also raising chicks. They used two types of food i) left over foods ii) insects, grubs and worms from my garden which is completely organic and I never used pesticides. Compared to previous years now in the period of 2010-2012 not many sparrows visit but i always have a pair of two sparrows who nest.

Good population exists in many part of city.
In Feb 2010, species like Semal, was in bloom and it attracted many kind of birds to feed on nectar.
Sparrows were also recorded feeding on nectar of Semal flowers

Many visits paid in last 3 decades and sparrows recorded, but sadly not a single bird could be seen on 26 02 2010 .in places where these were located earlier.

I remember a pair of sparrows had made an ugly looking nest in my window sill and i wanted them to be removed. Elders told me that its a good omen for a sparrow to build a nest especially when women are pregnant. I wanted the sparrows to raise their chicks in the nest they built in my house.
