Glenn Fonseca - Old Khar, S. V. Road Khar West Mumbai Maharashtra

I lived there and every evening at dusk the sparrows would gather on the huge peepal tree on the corner of our house busy chirping and talking to each other of the events of the day. Some would fly accross to the other huge peepal tree accross the road back and forth. We did not need an alarm clock to wake us up, the delightful chirping of the sparrows always told us it was morning and time to get up. My father always shared a little of his breakfast of chappati with the sparrows, taking the trouble to cut it in small pieces and keeping it on the parapet.

In the last two years there three nests two under the rain shade of our bedroom/hall window and one on the staircase landing outside our flat. The only successful nesting place till date and the only one remaining is the one on the staircase landing. It is one place that the crows can't get access to. The other nests have always been attacked by the crows and the young sparrows eaten by them. About two months back I've put up a sparrow house as a pair used to hang around the bedroom window on the clothes line and after the initial activity the pair did build a nest in the house. But for some strange reason, the female has disappeared and it is only the male who is around chirping and trying to attract a mate, but is still not successful. Hope he finds one shortly.

Gonda. On a hot summer day, in May 2010, we were leisurely sitting in the garden of our home. This garden supported numerous mango, litchi, jack fruit, papaya, lime and amla (Indian gooseberry) trees. As we were busy with our conversations, a female sparrow fell close-by with a mild thud as a handsome shikra (Accipiter badius) hurriedly flew overhead. My son Aakash, who was 11 then, picked up the bird with concern and brought it to me for examination. It was still alive with blood oozing from two tiny red spots on the underside of the neck. Aakash brought some water for the bird but it did not survive. Aakash’s discomfort now became visible as he caressed the bird with a hope to bring it back to life. I advised him to make a small hole in the ground and put her to rest. He dutifully followed the instructions with a heavy heart.

My daughter Shivani teaches in a school in the Sujan Singh Area, and sparrows are often seen in the school garden which is close to the old Sujan Singh Park flats. Being an old building it probably has suitable nesting places as the sparrows fly into the building and out into the school grounds .

It is my appeal to all people who construct their own independent houses - Please make some nook or corner of the exterior of the house sparrow - friendly where they can build nests. Most modern buildings simply have no places where house sparrows may nest. If possible, do plant some trees and leave food and water out for the birds.
