CN Subramaniam - Eklavya Campus, Malakhedi Hoshangabad Madhya Pradesh

I am writing from Hoshangbad, in Madhya Pradesh. i live in Kothi Bazar a locality on the banks of the Narmada and my office is in Malakhedi in the same town.
I had been distressed by the sudden disappearance of sparrows which used to haunt our houses some ten years ago. They used to make their nests all over the house, between books, on fan cups, in the ventilator, etc etc. they flew around the house and often got struck by the fans. During the mating seasons male sparrows could be seen fighting their images on the mirror much to our amusement. But all this vanished some years ago, in fact we did not even notice their disappearance till we read about it. We were told that this was due to the mobile phone.
We were gladdened when they reappeared a couple of years ago - again it is difficult to say when exactly. I have been observing them carefully during the last few weeks and can share a few interesting observations. it appears that they are avoiding interiors of houses. I no longer find them nesting within the rooms. however they seem to be nesting in the interface between the buildings and the outside. For example we have an external wall with a tiled veranda in our office. I find about two to three nests where the tiled roof and the wall meet. Further, we have bamboo 'chicks' to keep away the sun in other long verandas and we usually tie them up during the winter. As the summer set it we realised that there were sparrow nests in the folds of many of these 'chicks'. I can spot at least ten such nests in our office. Many more in similar interfaces between the house and the outside in my residential area.
By now in many places the eggs have hatched and the young ones have even been going around with the adults catching worms in the dirt around.
It is so nice to hear them make the characteristic ruckus!

Dr.Kalesh.S - Trivandrum city Trivandrum city Trivandrum Kerala

More than 300 sparrows were spotted in different parts of the
capital city in a recent survey conducted by the Travancore Natural
History Society.

The survey was done as part of World Sparrow Day — celebrated on March
20 — and it concluded on March 25.

The largest population of house sparrows — 148 — was recorded in
Palayam Market. While 53 birds were seen in the Chala region, 52 birds
were seen at Attakkulangara. Beemapally had 41 birds while
Shankumugham had 11 birds. Other areas where the birds were sighted
include Karamana (14), Ulloor-Medical College (6) and Valiathura (5).
Only four sparrows were spotted in the Medical College-Kazhakuttam
region.

“Contrary to expectations, no sparrows were observed around the
various granaries in the city. The number of birds observed at the
Central Railway station, Thampanoor and Medical College Campus was
less compared to last year's count. It was really encouraging to
observe that the nesting pots installed by the Writers Forum
Trivandrum at Palayam market were being used by the birds…” an email
sent to The Hindu by the society read.

Local people at survey sites gave the impression to society members
that there had been a significant reduction in the number of sparrows
observed over the last two decades. The note said this decline was
attributable to the fact that there was an artificial scarcity of food
grains, thanks to the polythene bag culture and lack of adequate
facilities for nesting. Wholesale shops and other petty shops which
earlier had gunny grain bags were now offering grains and pulses
wrapped in plastic.

The Society is planning to distribute birdbaths and nesting pots in
the coming season, the note added.(The Hindu)
