Sparrows were there till about the late 90's for sure in our apartment(ShantiPark). however, there were these monkey attacks durign summer, adn then suddenly, the pigeon population started to increase.

Our apartment had not just sparrows, but parakeets too were often seen sitting on trees and chirping, along with crows and kites(both brahmini and indian). Ever since pigeon population started, sparrows disappeared, and other birds are not to be seen. We do see the occasional crow, but it gets driven away by pigeons.

See details in my paper:
Santharam, V. 2001. Changes in the bird fauna of a scrub-jungle following fragmentation and habitat alterations. Blackbuck. 15(4): 83–93.
Interestingly, the earlier work (see below):
Barnes, A. M. 1939. Birds observed in and near Tambaram, South India. Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society. XLI(4): 744–747
Barnes, Alice M. 1938. Birds observed in and near Tambaram, Chingleput District, South India. Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society. XL(3): 467–476
cites them as being very common in the 1930's.

House sparows have their nest outside by house in closed open terrace. Few years ago i.e. 2-3 years, we could see their small birdies, but of late for we have not seen a single birdie. Though sometimes we can here their liltle sounds. The sparrows are staying here for more than 6 years. They disappear for 2-3 months in between then come back in the nest.
