I feel very happy to hear the little birds chirping around. I feel like building a small cardboard nest to them, only to worry about the rogue crows.

The small ventilator in a corner of our living room gives out into a narrow verandah, that is strangely not accessible. A sparrow family lives in the nook between the concrete roof and the ledge of the ventilator.

This family has been a constant distraction for our daughter for almost the last one year. Only recently has she been able to actually focus on the bird as it taps the glass as it comes and goes.

Last week, the bird came back with some straws in its beak and i told Vasu that the bird was building her home.

Every morning I sit in the verandah for tea, and observe these little darlings tweeting and chattering up and down the sill, often crouching over in the feeders and then in the water bowl below. The tea never seems so refreshing until I see the intensely satisfied physique of the little souls!
We have four sparrow houses in our small verandah in the house, (Chakli society, as we call!), and in two of them I have seen generations pass as merrily as they continue today! One of them is still empty, and visitors are regular and hopeful each time they come, but I often wonder if the efforts of people like us for such societies be successfully rewarded, until it would be supported by the other people too.
My school, Mother’s office, neither near any other place do I see this blissful sight of a happy and unhindered family of sparrows. We, humans have shooed them away, along with our own freedom and serenity! Friends, these little creatures simply believe in surviving and enjoying. For they cannot speak, yet too yearn just for a small sweet home and a satisfying bowl of water, lets help them live.
As I take the last sip of my tea and get up, they start rushing around, probably in confusion. Maybe they are afraid of me. If I could speak their language, I would say, “My dear little darlings, you are beautiful! And don’t worry, for I don’t intend to hurt or displace you! And one day, all my human friends will not, either! “
