satish gupta - Mall Road-Lower Bazar Shimla Himachal Pradesh

HP Forest Department & Himachal Birds started a joint venture regarding conservation of house sparrows in a great way during 2010 and every year sparrow day is celebrated. Artificial nests are distributed amongst the local citizens and of course the awareness programmes in schools etc.

I have seen a remarkable increase in numbers during these years.

Samira Agnihotri - Purohit colony, Sardar nagar Sardar Nagar Vadodara Gujarat

I vividly remember a major task given to children in the summer holidays was to scare away the sparrows from the garden, as they had a habit of breaking off the new leaves from plants.

Anagha Inamdar - Dhanashree Society Ganesh Nagar Pune Maharashtra

I have my office in Dhanashree Society and it is very picturesque. My cabin has a large window. Across that is a wonderful flowing nala and hundreds of trees around. A lot of animals/birds including mongooses, snakes and variety of birds live there.

Around winter time (Dec - Feb), we started spotting sparrows and bulbuls come and sit on our window sill. We then started to put up foodgrains, food leftovers, biscuits, chivda (made out of rice floor - poha) and their numbers increased. So much so that we now had to bring a bagful of these items every week to feed our little champions.

Sparrows and Bulbuls are voracious eaters and since they come in big numbers, they wipe out a good chunk of food in one go. Importantly, they prefer the more spicy stuff over plain grain.

We experimented by offering bajra grain and fried namkeen together. Voila!! the namkeen was gone in no time... looks like the fast food culture has crept in the bird lifestyle too :)

Its a fantastic experience to see lively birds and from such close quarters. We have a lot of their photographs and videos. How can we share them here? Do let us know.

How can we help save the sparrow?

Thanks,
Anagha

amol marathe - BITS campus Pilani Rajasthan

Sparrows are in plenty in and around BITS Pilani campus.
But at a time I have sighted a few e.g. 5-7 of them maximum.
I have been observing them since past 4 months since I joined the campus as a faculty member. I have not come across their nests though. They come very close to you especially near tea centres inside hostel premises. I am seeing them after a long time.

Other than sparrows there is good bird life here as well, notably, black naped woodpecker, Alexandrine parakeet, wire tailed swallow, Indian Grey hornbill, spotted owlets etc.

Pramila Raghavendran - Inside the main maruthamalai temple of Lord Murugan Maruthamalai Bus station Maruthamalai Tamil Nadu

I have always reverred childhood stories about sparrows which were the most common bird in the house. It would mention how the male & female sparrow would keep crows away from their nesting area. Also how the sparrow pick grains one-by-one which would sustain small kids' interest and probably make them finish their morsels of food!!
