This place is close to the canteen where grains are often loaded, unloaded and also some amount of leftovers/ vegetable scraps discarded. It has some trees around and though there are people, because it is a workplace the birds are not disturbed. Many birds such as Spotted Turtleneck doves, Indian Robin can also be seen hopping for worms or grains as the case may be.

About 4 bungalows around our own bungalow were demolished to make apartment blocks and hence there was constant construction activity going on for 2-3 years. I noticed that sparrows no longer came to eat the grains put out on our neighbors' terrace. All trees in our lane except two gulmohar trees abutting our compound wall were completely chopped down during this time. I never saw sparrows after the construction stopped. Green bee eaters too used to roost on a champa tree in our garden. They stopped roosting when the construction started and never came back again.

My aunt had cement filled in the gaps between the corrugated roof and the girders of the staircase duct precisely because sparrows nested in it and dirtied the staircase. After that sparrows would make occasional unsuccessful attempts at finding nesting places in curtain pelmets, but after this I never saw a sparrow nest.

I have installed a next box, couple of years back, for sparrows but these birds haven`t paid attention to it. My wife and my daughter keep the raw rice grains for them in the balcony along with water where these sparrows come to feed on regularly in morning and in evening.

Sparrows would come to eat breadcrumbs kept on the window sill. Sizable flocks of say 10-20 could be seen on grains spread out on terraces for drying. Sparrows could be seen taking dust baths alongside roads. In my house sparrows would make nests between the iron girder and the corrugated roof top of the staircase duct.
