I am Gswapna, very much interested in bird watching. I usually go by walk to the bus stand early morning, around 6:35 to 6:45 am, to the school, as I am working as an agricultural instructor in government higher secondary school, Kancheepuram. Six months back, when I was walking along the streets, I have heard some pleasant sounds. To my surprise, it was sparrows. I could hardly believe my eyes, as I have not seen these sparrows for a very longtime. Yes, it was sparrows only. When I go nearby or closer to them, they sometimes fly fast, or busy searching for food, or flying here and there, or eating any crumbs or left over food. Daily I see them during that time to till date. One Sunday, I went in search of these birds, and I found that these sounds are coming from a nearby Citrus tree, Lemon tree. I went inside the house and asked the residents about these sparrows and they told me that they wake up everyday on hearing these birds' chirping sounds only and no alarm or nothing. These sparrows arrive at about 5'o clock in the morning, and the residents keep some rice grains in their compound wall and in the front portion of their house and a bowl of water is also kept for them. They come and eat everyday. I have taken photos of these birds and also I saw a nest and young birds peeping out of the nests in the lime tree. Nowadays, these sparrows are coming to our house also. I have seen more sparrows nowadays along the 14th streets and adjacent streets.

I lived and grew up with sparrows. They lived with me in my house. They had their nests made in almost each of the rooms in my house. So, I estimate about 3-4 couples of sparrows lived with us. My mom's every day started with cleaning the floor off their droppings. Their chirping used to disturb me in my school studies. So I was not very fond of them. And, also it was quite a task for us to safely remove their nests from the ventilating windows in the summers so that they don't get hurt from the wings of the ceiling fans.
Now, that I don't get to see them around my house, the memories of those days appear very sweet. I miss them now. They are an integral part of my childhood memories.

They tried to build a nest in my ac outlet placed in the outside of the house. But I was not know about that earlier. Whenever i switch off the ac in the morning the sparrow sound settles down. Till that it will be shouting louder. I checked the compressor box to check the nest status. It was just a beginning. So i didnt use ac for few days. But the nest was not developed more than that. But the sparrows are coming daily in the morning and evening and roaming around my house sitout place.

For a long time we had been observing that house sparrows are becoming rare. For the last one month during our morning walk ( me with my husband who is also a professor of Environmental Science) in the campus we had been observing a variety of birds. In Hisar it is quite common to see local people spreading grains and flour for birds and insects in open areas near some bushes and herbs. That really works. Last week we were thrilled to spot one house sparrow in the campus near Teaching Block. For 2-3 days we could see just 1-2 birds. Today we could see around 5-7 sparrows.
