Yes. I was in school. My spare time during the week ends were many times spent in chasing down the poor sparrows in our hall-cum dining after closing the doors and windows surreptiously. Then I would catch them and put them under a bamboo basket and watch them in close quarters. Slowly I would slip in a small cup of water and some rice and biscuit crumbs and watch them eat. After watching them thus for and hour or so I would let them fly away, or my mother would anyway.
I would also try to climb and softly explore the nest that they would build during nesting time on the upper inset of our french collapsible glass door.
On subsequent years and times the sparrows vanished and now in Besant Nagar I do not find these sweet sparrows.
In late times the squirrels took over the nesting place from the sparrows in our house. Nowadays the squirrels too do not nest there, although they are to be found in our backyard still. Our area Besant Nagar has the large acres of swamp and green cover trees and bushes in the Besant Theosophical Society and Kalakshetra campus, and it has still got the fishing villages adjacent to the east of Besant Nagar on the sea side.

There is a nest in my balcony right now! I remember watching sparrows all the time everywhere when i was young. Arr through the early 1990's i used to live in Delhi near Khan Market and there would be groups of sparrows all around. Whenever we would put out any food sparrows would be the first to come for it. So much so, that i grew up thinking "chidiya" meant sparrow in hindi.. much later i realised chidiya means bird~!!
Slowly their numbers reduced and i've always missed the "chidya" of my childhood. I saw a good number at the old delhi railway station in 2005 when i was taking pictures there. I was very excited. Then again a good number at Dehradoon in old rajpur area while visiting friends there in 20010-11.
Imagine my excitement when i realised that a pair of sparrows has made a nest in my balcony! They've made their home inside the rolled up chic of my balcony.. rather precarious but i've given standing instructions to everyone not to unroll the chic ever!! It's a covered area which is protected from the rain and also from the sun.. Hope to see them raise a family there soon!

We wake up to the sounds of sparrows chirping every day. They seem to have made the duct in the building their home, so the chirping of the sparrows is pretty much the first thing we hear in the morning. We live on the fourth floor (of four).
