The sparrows numbers have quite dwindled compared to my childhood days at the same place.
The reasons may be cutting of old trees and non planting of new trees in particular which have fruits and have dense foliage or leaves so that only small birds can live on it like sparrows.
Also mobile towers may be reason for weak and non healthy new born sparrows. I also observe that this may not be the main reason as their numbers were already very low before introduction of mobile tower at our building but may be a additional negative effect with non planting of fruit bearing trees as particular reason behind their less numbers of sparrows.
I have in our balcony some flower pots and in addition a money plant which has a dense foliage which provide a little shelter to them during the summers. Also i have used boxes and other items in my balcony to help them having a safe place for nesting and also protection from various predators like crows,etc.
Hope my little effort may prevent them from being extinct.

I remember seeing the sparrow in Malleshwaram neighborhood when we first moved in around 1986 - they were in our school buildings which was mostly old tiled structures. By 1994, they were gone. I had recorded this disappearance in notes made during 1993-94.

again i started seeing sparrows when i changed my residence to kanchipuram.it tried to build a nest in our verandah last year.my wife who was born & brought up at chennai was very much excited on seeing sparrows.she said she used to see sparrows only when she used to visit her grandmas house a village near villupuram.not only sparrow we see a variety of birds which we dont usually see at chennai.but definitely no of sparrows is less when compared to those days(childhood days).glad that they visit our house nowadays.maybe since vedanthangal bird sanctuary is nearby we are seeing variety of birds.no. of crows is definitively less when compared to chennai

I have affinity with sparrows since childhood.Sparrows are intellegent and friendly in nature like I often see them playing with bulbuls.Every morning a flock of sparrow come to our balcony and I feed them rice grain and give them some water.They are so familier with us that they don't fear us and often visit our windows and balcony with their cute little chicks.It is pleasurebale to hear their chirping from dawn to dusk.I used to see sparrows in large number in my locality but recently their number is shrinking.
