There is one pair here in the colony that used to visit my house in search of a nesting place. I had placed four wooden nests last year in apr may 2011. I noticed that there was stiff competition between the Scaly Breasted Munias and the sparrows. Two nests were colonised by the munias. One was used as roost by the young ones last winter. The other was used by munias to breed. However the eggs(five) were never hatched in this one. How ever adult munias used to visit this nest box. The other two nests did not have any takers.
This year in Feb Mar the two nests that were not occupied last year were hurriedly occupied by a pair of Indian Robins. hey placed nesting material in both the nests simultaneously but used one to hatch the eggs. The sparrows tried to occupy one of these nests. However the aggressive male Indian Robin attacked the male sparrow from rear and probably piercing the bird with its slender pointed beak. The sparrows were not found here again. How ever there is one nest in the colony in a toilet ventilator made of grass. The house was not occupied at that time.

we lived in suburban chennai(3km from pallavaram near pammal)from 1975 to 1990.we changed residence within the same locality 3 or 4 times.it was not very well developed like now.my father was very fond of pet animals.we had a dog,5-6 pigeons, couple of rabbits,a dozen hen etc in our house.sparrows used to frequent our house almost daily.they used build nests in our verandah, hall.building of nests was considered auspicious,so we never disturbed the nests.there are occassions we would observe fledglings of sparrows & eggs in nest.mom would keep rice as a custom for crow everyday which she follows even now.many birds visited our house then (crow, sparrows, pigeon varieties etc).nowadays it is very difficult to observe even crows.

While taking a stroll in my colony, I used to see a few sparrows near a small shop in our colony. The shop was surrounded by greenery, so the sparrows must be having their nests somewhere nearby.
I bought a sparrow nest with 3 compartments (bedrooms?); the middle one even had a mirror attached to the opening, so one could see whats inside as reflection from the mirror.
I hung it outside my grandmother's portico; the place was surrounded by plants and a couple of fruit bearing trees. I had seen sparrows trying to catch insects in this place.
Within a month, a family had settled in one of the compartments, and we could hear their chirping all day long. Once I felt that the chirping sounded like that of young ones. I checked inside the nest, and found 3 small ones. After a few days, the place was silent; probably, the babies were grown enough to fly. The chirping continued, and a couple of adult sparrows were seen flying in and out of the nest. But this suddenly stopped.
I waited for a few days, but they were flying past the nest, but not entering it. I again tried looking into the nest and found 3 eggs. And the mirror was also fallen and beside the nest. Most probably, the sparrows got frightened when the mirror fell and have abandoned the nest.
I did not know what to do with the eggs and how to artificially incubate them; and it was already a week old. Since then, the sparrow have stopped making that nest their home & I had to remove the nest.
My grandma's old house is now making way for an apartment and I am now trying to place the nest in a different location in the same plot. Hoping the sparrows adopt it as their home.
