A few months ago,at 10 am one fine day, I heard chirping on my window and was surprised to see a sparrow. Surprised because I realised I hadn't seen a sparrow for a really long time. 3-4 years earlier, sparrows were regular visitors. Slowly their numbers dwindled. I didn't miss them as I was busy with my life. A chance visit from my chirping friend that day reminded me of them and suddenly I started missing them! Hope they return soon!!!

When I was a school going kid, say some 12-15 years back, I could see so many house sparrows in and around my house. I remember it was so common for the house sparrows to make nest inside our house. The birds used to enter our house fearless and eat bread crumbs and other food stuff from the dining table.
Unfortunately, i do not see birds entering our house anymore and making nests. Infact, the number of sparrows I observe around my locality has reduced. Increased pollution levels in air, sound, water and soil seems to be the reason to me.

my family were one of the first few settlers in this part of the town ! we have been here for the last 80 years. when i was in school , my mom used to say ' The seven sisters have arrived , meaning the seven sparrows that always used to come in the morning,as well as in the evening ,now about 15 years later , my whole town's changed , its so commercial, with such high rise apartments and building. the number of trees has gone down so much here. Thankfully , we still have MIT [ Anna university ] and a lot of good families who still protect tree planted by their ancestors ! but still I, don't get to see the seven sisters , their's only five !!! my house is big enough with a few tree around to house sparrows ! would love to have a nest or a bird house on our trees ! love animals and birds ! Cant see them die !!!

A shady hotel near Ooty bus station Anna Nagar Ooty Tamil Nadu
The sparrows were eating up hordes of flies that were zooming around near the shady hotel. This is a one-off record, I visited this place only once. Hope this helps.

This record is a one-time record, and I hope you can use it. I stayed at Sunshine Bungalow, Kotagiri for one night only, on 4th April 2012. I haven't been to the place before. The place was teeming with sparrows, and there were atleast 2 active nests, which had upto 3 chicks in them.
