N. Suryanarayana Moorty - Ramanuja Iyer St., Old Washermenpet Mottai Garden, Tondiarpet Chennai Tamil Nadu

When i was young, in our locality we had lot of tiled houses. Almost every house there will be a nest. Some might have created/helped with cardboard boxes for the nest at a height. I distinctly remember, my neighbour use to feed them with grains and rice. On roof top it is always plesant to watch little birds in a group of 10 to 20 or even more. It is an inspiration then to watch their activities eg: collecting food, flying in and out frequently from their nest, their merry noise and so on. I used to wonder how much quantity of food this little bird need in a day. How do they protect their nest and nestlings?

Sachin Kantipudi - Madhapur Sri Sai Nagar, Madhapur Hyderabad Andhra Pradesh

At our organisation, S&P Capital IQ, Hyderabad, in June 2011, we did a project called 'Conservation of House Sparrows' as part of CSR activities. As part of it, we distributed nearly 200 bird feeders and 150 nest boxes for free to interested people besides creating awareness. We are happy to find that sparrows are making good use of feeders. We also sensitized people about the importance of keeping clay containers filled with water during summer.

Ironically, i find relatively lot many sparrows thronging some Hyderabad localities when compared to some villages I knew where sparrows swarmed those villages once upon a time but disappeared now. So I guess usage of fertilizers is also one of the main reasons for their extinction (near) in addition to pollution (microwave and air mainly). So, it's high time we wake up and take active part in their conservation or else our children and grand children will have to see them only in textbooks.
