I am staying in this place for last 10 years. Since couple of years we have been putting rice in our balcony every morning. Around 5-6 years back we used to see around 4-6 sparrows every morning in the balcony. However these days the number has reduced to 2-4. We mostly see the sparrows in the mornings and evenings. Around our house we have sufficient number of large trees and probably sparrows have nests there
One observation - Sparrows are shooed away by piegons and crows(using might is right principle :-) )

I have lived in the Seawoods neighbourhood for 3 years now.During this time we lived in 3 different locations in this areas withing a radius of about 2km. I observed that sparrows do visit our balconies to eat sugar we place near Tulsi (Basil) plants as prashad in our balconies. These sparrows are not as chirpy as those I oberved during my childhood.
Although 3-5 sparrows visit us everyday, I did not find any nests. I am planning to set up a wooden box for them and see if they build nests.

During 1995-99, I have seen lot of sparrows, but gradually it got reduced and now I'm rarely seeing one now a days.
But now I'm seeing lot of peococks now a days.

For the last 3-4 years, sparrows visit the lemon tree in our backyard only during winters. Rest of the year, they are nowhere to be seen. Whereas earlier, they were present the whole year, probably some had nests in the lemon tree as well, since their morning chirping was a constant feature. I miss their chirping. The eerie silence when I wake up in the morning, making the sparrows' chirping conspicuous by its absence, seems quite ugly. Hey birds, please come back.
