I was used to being woken up by their chirps. I grew up in this locality where sparrows were such a common sight. Over the years however, their population has declined significantly. Apart from the usual crows, pigeons and the occasional parrot I do not recollect seeing any other birds over the last couple of years.

i used to see sparrows every day during this period(1990 - 1999) it had built nest inside our(grannie's)house....we used watch them fly through the window and exit from main door, by grabbing some grains in its beaks.
there were mango trees in front of house and seen them there all the time chirping.
its sad that for almost decade i have not seen a single sparrow, one reason is their are no longer trees around my place and i can only see buildings.

In my village sparrows were literally every where ,they used to collect garin from haystacks and also used to make nest in a govt school building ! and occasionally a chick (sparrow chick!) would fall from the nest . We used to wonder why the chick is bigger than both parents combined.
Must been a hell of a task feeding 3-4 of them.
Sadly now I have not seen a sparrow anywhere.Maybe they just disappeared or got fed up with feeding the fat chicks and thought enough is enough.

During 2005 i observed these birds, in about two years they just disappeared. We always had dogs at home and the birds regularly visited to eat the dog food which was mainly rice and to drink from the water bowl. They roosted at a flyover that is visible from my house. But in the last couple of years they are never to be seen. The habitat around my house is perfect for sparrows with a lot of grains and grassfields, beautiful flyover with lots of roosting space and a pond in our area for water even in summer. But i do not understand what went wrong to finish our little sparrow community. Hope this helps.

I am from a village called Kamalapur,Gulbarga district. I used to see many hundred sparrows around us. Now since 1991 I am staying in Bijapur and frequently I visit to my home place Kamalapur, in both the places I hardly see 2 sparrows in a month. Since 3 years I even prepared a earthern pot for nesting around my house, no nesting took place. I donot think there is shortage of food, I see many insects in the garden. Nesting places are also seen around. I am not able to understand mass disappearance of sparrows.
