In 2008 we decided to shift to Pune from Mumbai. For the first 2 years 2008-2010, I saw many species of birds but did not know how to befriend them. Till then my interaction with sparrows was limited to the water bowl. The biggest break came when I visited my brother in the US. He had a bird feeder hung outside his house that was visited by a variety of birds. I instantly fell in love with it and bought one for my friends back home. This feeder is a plastic cylinder with holes all around it with little perches for the birds to sit and eat. Back in Pune, I promptly filled it up with 4 types of grains (rice, wheat, jowar and ragi) and hung it in my balcony that is very inviting with a lot of lush green potted plants. I also kept another water bowl next to it and was sure that the sparrows would come instantly. I was very disappointed when for the next 4-5 days no birds visited it. Then on the 6th day 2 sparrows visited the feeder, inspected it, ate out of it and flew away. On the 7th day 4-5 sparrows came and had their fill at the feeder, and then on it was as if they went back and announced- “The Party is On!” With every passing day their number increased from 2 to 20 to 40… and the number is increasing! It’s as if my sparrows have spread their message to their near and distant relatives and friends to come and settle here, in this “Land of Plenty”. Occasionally Bulbuls, Doves and Babblers are allowed to join in the feast! A point to note is that the sparrows systematically pushed out all other grains except rice which they relished. In the beginning the plastic container of the feeder with a capacity of about 1kg lasted for 8 days. Now a days it needs to be refilled every 3rd day!!

I have been giving bird seeds and keeping water in a container everyday in my backyard and front entrance for the past two years. I have observed an increase in the population of sparrows and other birds. They come to feed and play around the trees and have fun playing in the puddle of water in my backyard. Whenever I get time I sit and observe them.

We shifted to Shivadarshan area from narayan Peth in 2007.
A] I guess even upto 2005 ; in narayan peth we used to keep piece of poli for sparrows visiting everyday ! Donno what happened after that ; hardly few we were able to see. mostly donno where did they disappear ! My Grandma resides till date in same area. She observed same things.
B] However, after 2007 we observed many sparrows because of trees in lane . Pigeons and crows as well now a days since last 1 1/2 yr. However, my grandma noted same thing in narayan peth as well withing the same time Duration.
* One of the tree infrount of my house is a sparrow colony with many of their nests. Sparrows visit our small balcony everyday without fail. We keep water for birds. Sparrows used roll down and play in sand (Res) in our parking which was there for a time being when parking -flooring stuff was going on ! Sparrows don't fly even if i stand just besides our huge french window.
** Notable Thing :
1. Crow prefers water in small ranjan which is typically used for sankranti-waan. That is kept in our Tulsi tree set filled with water.
2. Pigeons and sparrows prefer water pored in Tulsi-set dish. (Dish in which Tulsi 's Pot is kept ) .
3. Sparrows sometimes dip their Lil head in... :)) I guess they also need a shower in 38 C. Of Pune

Some times in evening ; all of them just start chirping together ! Its really hmmmmm listening that chiw-chiw !!
Yep, Must b noted in summer they are not always spotted in a gr. of 5-30 at a time. But are about 5-10. And they come for their drink in a gr. of 2-5 @ one time !
P.N. : It s back side of garden where sparrows seen. Their colony tree is far from garden. In garden area , pigeons usually seen on trees. and crows !

Sparrows have been there in my locality since long time.but they never visited my garden.Then I started keeping regular supply of water and grains esp. Kang (in gujarati) .Now they come everyday.I have put nest too but this year they have not nested there.

i reside in a bungalow and always wished to have sparrows build their nests in our surroundings... they do visit daily for food and water but has not build any nests in our surroundings...
