I have kept 2 Bird Houses in my balcony and regularly feed the birds with Millets and 8 to 10 sparrows have started visiting the Bird house. But for the in the past 2 Years they have built nests in the Bird house but have not laid any eggs though they come to eat food daily. However I find their population increasing steadily and there are more than 30 Sparrows in our building compound.

The sparrows account for one among nearly 85 varieties of birds that I have been able to spot in and around our farm. The area is green with dense tree cover. Additionally, we have some palm trees inside our courtyard and these have been completely colonised by sparrows. I therefore see them busy all the time, flying in and out. New chicks are born and fly away. Sometimes eggs fall out of nests and break on the ground due to competition from other birds (starlings, drongos, pigeons, doves, and the odd treepie, etc).

We had surveyed this area from 2006-8 and made several visits during this period and surprisingly no sparrows were observed on the hills, though present in the viallges at the foothills.

It was time after makar sakranti.. i saw a house sparrow, tied up in manjha (kite rope) and was struck in bushes. That was the time i was in college, graduating in science. I released that sparrow from manjha, using instruments from my dissection box. It was a good feeling, as i had always used it to disect dead animals. saving a life using it was a wonderful feeling. Sparrow's claws were badly hurt and bleeding. My father put in some antibiotic lotion there. It was so badly hurt that i had to keep her with me for 4-5 days. When well she started flying under basket. So I freed her. And we became really good buddies. Every morning she used to take bathe when I used to water plants in garden. Whenever the door is open she would leave no chance of coming in.. and used to fly around me and would sit close to me on sofa.. it used to eat and then fly away!! my friends and family used to call her bhini ki dost!! :) it used to thank me everyday in its own way for saving its life. Had i left it there in bushes that day, it would have been eaten by a dog.. I am glad how such a small deed made me so happy!! and even now when I am reminding.. I feel brighter and happy and content.. Help House sparrows!!!!!!
