Generally sparrows are seen in the morning or at dawn in groups near the lawns. They are not observed near the residential area as before. I offer food leftover on the terrace , other birds come but no sparrow.Recently one of my neighbors observed a pair of sparrows in their balcony and they gave repeated visits for three/four days as if they're looking for a place for nesting. It is also to be noted that there is a significant increase in the population of other birds like parrots, pigeons, Indian moyna, peacock etc. It may be one of the reasons for changing attitude of sparrows near the residential area.

Srisri Reddy - Our house in Mugalur Mugalur Village Hosur Taluk, Krishnagiri District Tamil Nadu

In the time period mentioned above, I was studying in 4th standard and the place mentioned is our house. Ours is an agricultural family. Every time there used to be plenty sacks of grains stacked in the center of the house. There is opening in the center of our tiled house and sparrows used to live here feeding on it. They made nests in the small holes in the roof. There were at least 8-10 nests. Many times, the little sparrows learning to fly will be seen on the floor. Using ladder, we were placing back in its next.

Then from 2000, draught period started and from then, rains were poor and local ponds remained dry. There were no sacks of grains in the house now and sparrows too. And there were many other factors which are responsible for its decline.

I was going to this market for some work there and was pleasantly surprised to hear the chirping of so many sparrows on a particular tree located at one of the corners of the market. It had been so long since i had seen sparrows. Pigeons are all i get to see but these cute, beautiful birds are rarely to be seen these days. I was then reminded of this initiative. This is a wonderful initiative. Good Luck :)!
