It is the sparrows that help me get up early in the morning by their crispy noise. Actually in our house the presence of sparrows was felt from 2001 . The birds have made their nest at the top of the first floor staircase and have been living their eversince. At the begining there were about 8 sparrows and with time there population increased to about 40. But I have observed that their population is decreasing nowadays to about 25. People here believes that Sparrows bring prosperity.

i have noticed sparrows everytime in some small holes present in the body of a overbridge in that area. these may be their modern houses!!!!

Since I live in Chennai (the capital city of Tamil Nadu State) and started missing the sparrows in my area (Tambaram on the outskirts of Chennai) since ealry 2000, I was overjoyed to see the sparrows foraging for food on a busy road in Tiruchendur, a coastal town i Tamil Nadu. Although the place was crowded with pilgrims and vehicles, the sparrows went about picking grain without fear. It was nice to see them that way as it was a decade since I last saw them in my porch trying to build a nest with hay. I can't remember whether there were more males or more females, but one gender dominated the scene. I think sparrows disappeared from from my local market area because, merchants do not transport grains in jute bags these days. Jute bags are know to cause spillage of grains and provided the birds easy access to food.
