I have large no. of potted plants on my roof. When new shoots sprout I try to protect them by covering with net. One afternoon I observed a female sparrow dive vertically down and enter through the net to attack the new shoots. On seeing me it attempted to fly away. After several attempts it succeeded to get through and fly away. I thought it was a desperate move for food.
The group on my roof come in numbers of 10/12 birds. One peculiarity I observed is that there are more males in the group than females. Smaller numbers rest in the afternoon on my window grills.

When I was in my graduation period I lived in Dumka for five year in Dangalpara mohalla which is in the main city. I frequently observed sparrows in the rooms, house and around house. The built their nests on Ventillators. When I left this place in may 2009 I frequently observe sparrows. But unfortunately I am unable to share present position.

But these days when i visit to my village I don't observed any sparrows. I read several article about sparrow declining due to mobile tower radiatiation which seem to be true

The area that I am reporting here is one of the places I grew up and we (my family) used to live there in a house. Our family name is 'Gubbi' which means 'Sparrow' in Kannada (comes from the name of a small village in Haveri District from where my father's family's ancestors hailed).
It was very common to see house sparrows build small nests inside people's houses in this area, especially around the time when these sparrows would lay eggs and hatch them. Our house also played host to one such nest and we made sure not to disturb them and ensure that they were protected. We often put out water and food for them and my grandmother used to say that having sparrow nest inside our house will bring good luck! And one fine morning, we woke up to the sound of two tiny little just-born sparrows! Our neighbours used to tell us that the biggest sparrow nest in the neighbourhood was in our house and it wasn't really a co-incidence that our family name is 'Gubbi'! And even more interestingly, the sparrows somehow always seem to ensure that they excrete their droppings outside the house :)

We have a beautiful peepul tree outside our window which is home to, and visited by, many different birds including crows, sparrows, bulbuls, rose ringed parakeet, white breasted kingfisher, coppersmith barbet, koyel, kites, pigeons, myna, sunbirds, magpie, taylor bird, black drongo, golden oriole, small bee eater, etc. The sparrows, in absolute number, and relative to the other birds have significantly diminished over the past years. I am interested in conserving the habitat of all birds and would enjoy help saving the sparrow as they are wonderfully cute and friendly birds!
