The area i'm reporting about has a lot of trees, flowering as well as fruit. I would actually like to talk about the 2000s as that's when the number of sparrows started decreasing drammatically.
prior to this time sparrows were a very familiar sight in every garden. Our yard itself contains 3 trees(neem, mango), So every morning and evening we would awake to the chorus of probably hundreds of birds twittering in the trees. We would see quite a number in the late afternoons pecking the shaded ground.Besides sparrows, we also observed crows, doves and butterflies.
Upto 2003-4 this became a rare occurance and thereafter to the present, the sparrows and crows have not returned yet. Happy to report that since 2011, have noticed some buttertflies as well as some stray doves though they do not roost here.
the major reasons that comes to mind are the increasing use of cell phones, increased density of population, increased cementing of yards and grounds leading to fewer water and insect holes.
An observation to support this is the fact that though they dissapeared from residential areas, i have observed them at my workplace which is an industrial area 25kms from the city. there they can be spotted quite often along with an exiting array of other birds like kingfishers, herons, bulbuls etc. as well as a variety of butterflies and insects.
though the industrial area is busy during the day, it virtually emptys by evening. there are also a number of tanks, wells and even bordering farms and large open spaces. This is the opposite of the residential picture with dense closely packed houses, longer cellular and wi-fi usage, cemented courtyards and covered water-reservoirs.
I hope this information helps your initiative..
