Tara Hall Compound, Snow view Mallital Nainital Uttarakhand
Very often I use to see the HS, while going to collage in the entire hillock from higher to lower region (2150-1950m). In the morning time my mother use to feed them uncooked rice and within no time there will be more then 75 HS, females more as compared to males.
Still the same process is going on and the major difference I found is that the feed is being shared by HS, Spotted dove, warblers (which were never seen upto this much of heightearlier), Himalayan whistling thrush and some time grey tit. The number of HS has gone down drastically (less than 30 at a particular place where earlier 75 HS were present).
Similarly, people use to feed at several places like on the roof of their houses and in temples.
There is one temple (Pasan devi) in Nainital near lake on the other side of mall road where I have seen a saint feeding HS and they use to be in his hand and lap more than 150.
However, in higher sides monkeys are creating problem for the HS and not allowing to feed.

small locality adjacent to kumar Prasana co op soc behind Wanawadi shamshan bhoomi SRPF Wanwadi Pun Parmar Nagar, Wanwadi Pune Maharashtra
My Observations:
I m a resident of Pune & I used to stay in a old style independent house with dense locality on M.G.road camp Pune where i used to get up with the chirping of sparrows & those days they were in hundreds even they made nests in the gap between wooden purlins of drawing room on my old house on M.g.road, Some times few got killed by ceiling fans. & many used to be eaten up by Cats in the area. Many made their nests in small hole of corrugated tinnd sheet roofs of the houses in the locality.
Now i have shifted to Flat at wanawadi. I observed in new buildings its not possible to make safe nests. so there are no sparrows in our society . but the old locality of small houses just adjacent to our soc I see many sparrows & they have good & safe nesting places between the tiny roof gaps.
I have hung one PVC pipe in my car park & there some small bird has already made a nest. So i think other than mobile towers. the reason for disappearing sparrows is they dont get safe 7 right place for nesting
