I have grown up seeing sparrows, feeding them grains, and during the period mentioned I observed a serious decline in their number, sighting a sparrow was kind of rare. but now the number seems to be increasing, Not many nests were observed expect few like in the crevices of buildings & electrical junction box.

I am a proffesor in life sciences, D.C.B. Girls' College Jorhat, once when i was teaching my students, I roughly heard chirping of a few birds. I opened the window near the teacher's table and to my fine surprise, I saw few little creatures(in Assamese, we call them "gharchirika", popularly known as sparrows), collecting foodgrains from the nearby paddy field. Since then, I have constantly witnessed these sparrows around the locality called "Tarajan", an old residential area of Jorhat town, Assam, India.

Year 1975. I was studying at Govt Higher Secondary School Shobhapur Road, Pipariya. Sparrows roamed freely in the school corridors and at times became source of much amusement (to the students) and embarrassment (to the teachers). These birds found doors of the class room a convenient perch for cooing and wooing even while the class was in session. In his playful mood, male bird would come hopping and mount the female, resulting in the burst of hushed giggles from the back benches which would quickly propagate to the front. Realizing the seriousness of the issue, stern look of the teacher would suddenly melt in to a sheepish smile and the only advice he would offer to the students was to concentrate on the book rather than looking here and there!

In my chilhood days till few years back I used to see lot of sparrows and their nests.At some point of time We had to close ventilators in room and sometimes the windows to prevent sparrows entering in tne room. Now I hardly find asparrow and not seen their nests for quite sometime.
