I am keen birder and have dedicated some space in the veranda of my house for 02 nests only for sparrow’s since past 02 years. We place fresh water & grass seeds for small birds to feed.

2011 Jan- April = 01 pair was nesting in one of the boxes, the first hatch was of 03 chicks out which all chicks survived till 30 March 2011. Observation – Very bold birds not bothered with our presence in the verandha. Male bird had a tumor or some sort of wound on its wings but this did not hinder in fulfilling his fatherly duties. He is not to be seen for past 07-8 months.

2012 Feb = Currently 01 new pair is nesting in one box, the pair is very shy to human movement in the veranda but are trying to get use to our presence. The birds are collecting nesting material and using the old ones left by the last years pair.

Would surely like to make my contribution to Sprarrow revival, at a given time i have counted 25 – 30 birds in and around my residence. Observation – The high number is due to farm land nearby our residence, lot of tree cover around, lot of nooks & corners for nesting in colony.

Arun Bhargava - Raheja Complex, near Sholay Building, Versova Mumbai Suburban Maharashtra

They come inside my house, if windows are open. At times they try to build nest in some corner or so.

There are always sparrows on the balcony or parapet around here.

Though this questioner is about sparrows, I did observed once a fight between Crows and Parrots, which looked about domenance for a rain water drainage pipe coming out of a building terrace. I do have a short video or that.

Vikram Golcha - India Jaipur Rajasthan

Sparrows exist in healthy numbers in my area. They frolic in the bird baths and small pools of water in the evening. They chase insects and feed on them. They are fond of the lawns where they seem to be feeding on insects / seeds. In the evenings the flocks (containing 100s of birds) flock onto a tree and make a huge din in chorus.
Once I observed a sparrow attack and pester a house lizard till it shed its tail . Then the sparrow feasted on the abandoned tail which was still wriggling. Though I have seen this only once ... but it seems like a usual behavior because the bird seemed to know what it was doing .

In around 2008 two sparrows built their house on the outer water pipes of my bulding in gokuldham, right outside my window. Since then I have seen generations and generations of them. I keep a tray outside where I put chappati/rice/fruits) for them. In fact they keept entering my house soooo often ...they are my extended family now and my alarm clock. And I am sure I'll see them and their offsprings as long as I am hhere.
