There is canteen in my plant where I use to see them quite often but the numbers are very few (2-5). I was so happy when I first saw them there. Now I see them quite often there. In Surat as well you can see them quite often although lesser in no. But compared to other cities they are in good numbers in Surat. But miss their group chirping.

Dear friends,
I have been living in South Sinthee, Kolkata for last twenty years. It is located at the northern tip of my city. This is a residential colony developed during the early eighties. Compared to the rest of the city, my locality is quite green with trees, plants and with a well maintained park.
During the initial years the house sparrow population was considerable or, if I may use the term 'normal'. But gradual disappearance of house sparrows started since late 90s and in last four-five years there has been drastic fall in the population.
Though few people seem to be concerned, but this issue has been a talking point in my family.
It is absolutely heartening to learn that an endeavor in this field has been initiated and reassuring too, after having read stories from other parts of my country.
Thanking BNHS, Ministry of Environment and Forests,
NCBS and NCF.
Regards,
Nilanjan Mitra.

The house adjoining mine had a garden full of small bushes and dense creepers, which climbed over the fence and peeped into my house. This dense canopy was a favourite of 4-5 sparrows, chirping around everyday in my garden. Seeing this, I started keeping water and grains for them regularly. And soon their number swelled to around 40 sparrows! I even clicked their photos regularly (I wish this survey gave an option to upload pics of sparrows in our locality). The sparrows also made a nest in a small crevice between the outer walls of my house.
But one day, the neighbour cut all those creepers and bushes which provided canopy to the sparrows. Their favourite spot to hang around all day, was no more. And immediately, I saw a marked decrease in the number of sparrows in the area. I continued to keep food and water for them, but now I see only 5-6 sparrows in and around my garden. Thankfully, their nest in the crevice of my house walls is still there, inhabited by a couple of sparrows. I hope the creepers will grow again, and this place will once again reverberate with sparrow chirps...
