Sindhi Colony Pachmarhi Road Pipariya. Distt Hoshangabad Madhya Pradesh
I was born in Pipariya and continued to live in this house in Sindhi Colony till 1977 before I left for college studies. There used to be an old neem tree in front of our house on Pachmarhi Road and this tree was a roosting place for the sparrows of the area. Hundreds of them would gather in a big flock after sundown and make loud but pleasant noise before suddenly becoming silent. A little disturbance and all of them would burst out of the tree canopy only to return again for yet another round of orchestra and then silence again. I often used to lie down on a cot in the angan (front courtyard) after returning from the school in the evening listening to this soothing music. High flying swallows used to fill the sky as bright stars slowly appeared one after the other on the canvas of a fast darkening sky. Somewhere in early seventies, one night there was a sudden thunderstorm and next morning we found hundreds of sparrows lying dead on the wet ground under the tree. Children gathered round the tree in the morning watching with grief the catastrophe brought about by the heavy downpour.

The neighbouring apartment complex has many tall trees which are visible from my flat's balcony.Last week, i heard chirping sounds and rushed to see 3 sparrows in the tree directly in front of my balcony. after few minutes, few squirrels chased them away. a crow also chased them. wish i can help them find a place safely.

I was going to the college as usually at around 9.00AM...and unexpectedly i first came across three sweet sparrows....they were feeding and i had to take a turn and as soon as i took... for my surprise i saw around 30 sparrows chirping and flying here and there....i felt very happy as i was seeing sparrows after a very long time and that too in a city like Noida....THEY MADE MY DAY LITERALLY!! :)
I appreciate the works being conducted for the protection of these sweet little birds whose absence makes the day gloomy...

We live in a penthouse with an open terrace of 1000 square feet. Early every morning(around 6 am) we have our tea out there. We have kept a plate full of broken bits of uncooked rice as well as a pan full of water which attracts the few remaining sparrows to our terrace. Its fun as well a pleasure and a learning experience watching the sparrows feed and interact with each other. Also their trust which has grown over a period of time.Funnily, they enjoy Basmati rice much more then the cheaper dubraj variety of rice!!
