Dr. P. K. Verma - Lalkothi Bhaglpur Bhagalpur Bihar

The sparrows were present in thousands in number, at least a dozen in every home and moved in the open fields but with urbanization and development of residential colonies and destruction of the trees their number has been declined fast. In an area about a km away large trees are present but in this locality old homes and trees have become scanty. Farm lands also have been converted into colonies. Probably it may be the cause of their population decline

Sanjay Marathe - Dreams Complex, Behind Dreams Mall, L.B.S. Marg, Bhandup West Bhandup West Mumbai Maharashtra

Dreams complex is a recently developed housing and mall at the site where the API Scooter factory once stood. The residential section consists of about 16 high-rise buildings. On the west of the complex is the L.B.S. Marg and the Bhandup Hills; on the east are open wetlands beyond the railway line, and further east is the E.Express Highway and the mangroves. I have been living here for the past 4 years. I have found that the new buildings have a lot of crevices which provide safe haven to the sparrows, as the openings are just right for the sparrows; no other bird can use them because of their larger size. One such crevice exists across my house on the 19th floor. I have found hectic nest building activity in each season.

Local nature club gave news item about " homes" for sparrows made out of recycled plastic. That was two years ago.I have bought two and hung up in balcony at various locations.Sparrows come and eat feed from top of these " homes" as well as from inside. But are yet to make a nest inside these very comfortable " homes".Any suggestions?
My father who lived in near by town [ Sachin] kept lamenting about dissapearance of sparrows from this town [ since 2000AD.He died in 2008.Since then I am quite attached to this cause of saving sparrows in the memory of my departed father.Would welcome any suggestion for attracting sparrows to build nest in my balconies.[ numbering two]

Kalpana Thakkar - Residential Thaltej Ahmedabad Gujarat

The sparrows share the area with other birds like purple sunbird, purple rumped sunbird, rock pigeon, jungle babblers, common myna, red vented bulbul, Indian robin, ashy prinia and white brown wagtail. They are normally in the back yard where there are more plants and where normally no one would go. Once I went there to photograph them , the male sparrows and other bird sps chirped non-stop together till I moved away but later they got used to my frequent visits. I think the number of sparrows has reduced because the other sps of birds have come in but they are living together. In the nineties, there were more sparrows and less of other sps.
