There is (was?) a roost of more than a 100 sparrows on a Pongamia tree in the busy square itself. One evening, as the decline of Sparrows was being discussed, I went to Mr. Gopal Thosar's (Hon. Wildlife Warden of Nagpur then) place which is just near the square. When, I was returning home I called him back from the square and asked him to come there.
It was a pleasant surprise for him, as there were more than 100 sparrows perched on electric wires above the busy traffic. The last time I saw the roost was in March 2010.

Sparrows have always been welcomed in our house. I have seen at least 5-6 generations of sparrows in our house over a period of 10 years. But, since last 2-3 years, sparrows coming into our house has reduced considerably.
But lately, number of sparrows being seen are on the rise in our locality. I hope this number increases even further.
As the number of trees & the type of trees present in the locality is varied, different types of birds are seen (even those which are very rarely seen in Dombivli) because of which even the number of sparrows is also increasing.

There are few trees in the backyard. I saw some sparrows hoping around from tree to tree but dint see any nests.

There was a Babul (Acacia) tree near Mr. Nandkishor Dudhe's (a birder from Amravati) house. There used to be more than a 100 sparrows roosting in this particular tree. A Shikra could arrive every evening and attack the tree many times till it took one Sparrow nearly every day. The chirping would stop for a moment when death arrived and the group had given away one of its member to the one high up in the food chain. Unfortunately, this tree was cut by a mindless person, and the sparrows shifted somewhere else, leading to stopping of our observations.

One pair roosts in my ancestral home. Often, one partner gets killed because of the fan in the hall. Everytime one dies, the survivor brings in another partner. This has been going on for last few years now. My mother feels so sad for them, as they keep dying in front of their eyes.
Twenty years back, when I stayed here, there were hundreds of them. But now I did not really look for them hard.
