Sparrows were a common sight in the residential locality where I used to stay which has lots of greenery. The greenery is still there but the sparrows have disappeared. There was a time when sparrows built nest inside a small box (meant for electrical meter & fuse circuit) in my house.

During this period it was difficult to get rid of sparrows as they tried to make nest at several locations- on lamp post of verandah, between iron safety rod and pane of ventilator, behind the tilted painting that used to hang on nail with a string, sill of ventilator which our old fashioned house had in plenty, between angle iron and tin of a tin shade, etc. I remember that once I had seen a maggot in a dead chick of sparrow. Once as a child remember having stepped on a fallen chick and had a feeling that I have stepped on a boiled potato. When I realized that it was a sparrows chick, I had jittery feeling.

i used to see sparrows in our balcony. Then started calling with love as if i am inviting them home. Now, we keep everyday fresh water and rice covered with husk. They eat happily. They visit our house everyday.

Recently I saw one sparrow in this same area that was once teeming with the birds. Yes, just one. It looked lonely :(

We have a small balcony full with 10 - 12 potted plants. The balcony has a metal grill - enough for sparrows to come in and to keep out pigeons and crows. We have kept a few coconut shells filled with water and food grains for the birds.
We have also hung baskets for the sparrows to nest.
Every morning between 6am to 7am we could easily spot 10 - 20 sparrows enjoying the food and water. After that the numbers go down to 5 - 10 birds in an hour.
In the mornings we keep our inner sliding window closed so that the birds are not disturbed or frightened. Earlier they used to nest in the baskets provided. But of late due to the opening of a park ( A K Garden) next to our building, the nests in our balcony have declined. The park is full with a variety of full grown trees and shrubs. Probably they are nesting in the park now.
The sparrows normally feast on our Tulsi plant and love to eat the tulsi leaves. Many a times they have plucked all the leaves and have left it barren, We have now increased the number of tulsi plants in our balcony.
Of late we have started taking photographs and videos to document them.
