we live in a residential complex having a garden where we used to see large number of sparrows. By 6pm all these sparrows used to rest on our garden tree tops with melodious chirping and sleep whole night till the month of Feb but off late the numbers have reduced. Not sure if this is because of seasonal change or something else.
They also come into our flat balcony for feed and water.

Myself & my wife Zankhana are proud and fortunate to be a part and a major contributor to an event that started here in Ahmedabad on the World House Sparrow Day called "Mirchi-Mirror Save The Sparrow Campaign"( In association with Radio Mirchi and Ahmedabad Mirror). Around 4000 clay nests were distributed for free to the citizens of the city along with bird food and a leaflet which guides them on how to use these nests better... Besides this we have 5 nest boxes fixed in our bungalow's garden ( 2 nest boxes made out of shoe box by Zankhana). We provide regular supply of fresh water and bird food in our garden. We have a regular nesting of Indian Robins in 2 of the nest boxes, but still no sparrows nesting in... This year we saw a sparrow couple collecting nesting material about a month back but haven't been able to locate their nest yet. Last year we had seen couple feeding babies with bird food in our garden. I have a doubt that they have their nest somewhere in the bougainvillea that is there in the garden. This year after the commencement of Mirchi Mirror campaign, we have put up 6 clay nests in the garden 2 weeks back, so I am sure Sparrows would start using them soon...

the house in which i grew up in lucknow is a big old mansion with carvings and elaborate jaali work all around in the house. these places from a long time have nested the sparrows in our house. 10 years back there were a fairly a large number of sparrows that can be seen as the whole locality is a very old area with old fashioned houses, but with passage of time and with the local residents leaving their house the sparrows have also shrinked in numbers because of the loss of habitat. people used to feed these birds (my mother still does) but now this practice is slowly disappearing.
To help protect these birds we should revert back to the practices that our forefathers used to do so that they can be saved before its too late.

It was shocking to see sparrows inside the hangar of our aviation office, but since it had been too long of seeing any sparrow...i really did enjoy that particular moment. We who usually find birds as obstruction or foriegn objects for our aircrafts didnt feel so at that moment as it been long since i had seen a sparrow.
