Deepa Guruprasad - Pottery Town, Bangalore Pottery Town, Chinnapa Garden Bangalore Karnataka

The area where I saw the house sparrows was in a small town called Pottery Town, where several generations of potters have been residing. Obviously, the setting of this area is void of high-rise buildings and supermarkets. Instead there are Mangalore-tiled houses (only few remain), and small mom and pop stores, that sell rice grains in gunnybags. There are more cycles and two-wheelers since it is a narrow lane.
In recent times, I have seen the number of sparrows dwindle in the city and it breaks my heart. The absence of low buildings with safe nesting havens and increase in the number of mobile usage is a large contributor to this swindling number. These days, the few sparrows I see are near the mom-and-pop stores, where a man is usually cleaning grain/rice that attract these beautiful little birds.
If there is anything I can do to increase their population in my city, count me in.

Sparrows built nests in our attics, ventilators and trees on the road. They visited our balconies, backyards and porticos to collect the grains that we used to throw especially for them or leave the residue of the grains that we cleaned. Very often they entered our homes in the nights and rested on the attics. They were part of our lives and there were instances when their young ones fell off the nests and since we were told that we should not touch them, lest they will be deserted by their clan, we would carefully left them with the help of cardboards and put them back into the nests. The nests were made of cotton waste, twigs and dry leaves. We would often find their feathers. Our favourite pastime was to observe the parents (we could very well identify them)feed the young ones throughout the day and also teach the young ones to fly. Oh! I miss all that fun and feel bad that my children never got to see sparrows from such close quarters!

There are some big and very grown trees around my resident. I have seen many birds coming/staying/having home on those trees...but not sparrow....before 2 years.

But suddenly we have very unorganized development of building. So suddenly quite road become very busy....and with that I don't see any birds even trying to build nest on trees which were good possibilities for nests just before 2 years.
