GAIL india township Auraiya Uttar Pradesh
Rarely do I see these birds now in our township whenever I go home. Earlier they used to come to drink water from the pitcher we kept outside. I was such fun feeding these beautiful little birds. Now I rarely see them , just 2-3 in number that too very rarely. I have never seen any sparrow nest in our locality.GAIL India township is very green, if this is the situation in such places then imagine the scene in cities. Awareness should be created so that citizens can contribute to the well being of sparrows.

About 10 years ago I used to see a lot of sparrows and almost whole day could hear their sweet chrips. But now the number of sparrows is declining. I would like to do anything to help bring back sparrows in big number. Please advise what could be done. Thanx.

For many years, upto 2010, ie. from 1995 to 2010 to be precise, there were very few sparrows to be seen. But during the past two years they have made a dramatic comeback with many of them nesting in our building vestibule.
I have noticed that the sparrows have made a comeback ONLY AFTER MOST OF THE TRANSPORT VEHICLES IE. TAXIS & PUBLIC TRANSPORT BUSES SWITCHCED TO CNG FUEL.
As long as the taxis, autorickshaws & trucks were using ADULTERATED FUEL, THERE WERE FEW SPARROWS TO BE SEEN.
Mobile towers have increased during the same period too, but I am not so sure about their effective/destructive range. But I am quite sure that the poisonous fumes of adulterated fuel ( petrol + naphta or Diesel + Naptha ) were the real culprits in exterminating sparrows.
A small scale experiment could reveal the truth.
