While I have stayed in Bhubaneshwar for the past 1 and a half years, there were very few sparrow sightings. However when I went to my house this year, I was overwhelmed with the number of sparrows that I did see. However a thing to note is that sparrows in this area has increases in the last couple of years only. Two to three years before the situation seemed to be like what is now in Bhubaneshwar. It was good to see them back.

During my childhood days I was residing in Dhanbad, Jharkhand.I have seen house sparrows. Those were the days when my verandah's each corner had a nest where these little birds resided.. i still remember them chirping. Oh i miss them so much. Today when my son is around 1 and 1/2 years old...i feel so pity as i hardly see any birds flying around to show him. i just share the pictures with him.
truly the time has changed.
i miss you "lil birdies"

when we came to live in this newly developed residential area in 2002 which used to be an agricultural field, I used to see a couple of sparrows chirping and hopping around. They made me nostalgic and I desperately wanted them to keep visiting my backyard.I started putting out a plate full of rice and a bowl of water on the terrace. They were very cautious at first and then started feeding from the plates. Their numbers increased day by day and at one point of time I counted 5 dozen sparrows sitting on my terrace and the balcony of my neighbor. I requested my immediate neighbor not to use pesticide in their garden which they obliged. Now I have a bird feeder(which my daughter has sent from Canada) in the corner of my small garden and a water bath which the sparrows use everyday. Recently I have procured three nest boxes and have installed them on the wall and hope they will start using them. Even as I type this I keep hearing the happy chirping of at least a dozen sparrows in my backyard. I have taken many photos which I will be uploading shortly.

Most of the times, these House Sparrows were seen foraging along with Eurasian Tree Sparrows which are also equal in numbers here.

I do not think number of Sparrows declined around my house in last 15 years. The number varies from season to season possibly due tolocal migartion. In my opinion in Kolkata city the number of Sparoows have not declined too much - as the city still has many housed / building where they can build nests.
Atleast 25-30 Sparrow bathe daily in the water tub that I provide during the peak summertime. They regularly nest in my house.

Number of Sparrows ( and other seed eating birds who used to damage the corps during the harvesting time) declined sharply in the agricultural belts in South Bengal possibly due to excessive use of pesticides.
