The Mahabharat, the great mythical epic unfolds the saga of a mass killing of snakes, ‘The Sarpa Yanjna’, conducted by the great Kuru King Janamenjaya, the son of Pariskhita (the son of Abhimanyu and the grand son of Arjun). Janamenjaya conducted the ‘Sarpa Yanjna’ to kill all the snakes in the World including the Snake King ‘Taskhyaka’ within 7 days, to save Pariskhita from the curs...e of the Bramin ‘Sringi’, son of a Sage ‘Samika’. These 7 days, Raja Pariskhita spent listing the discourses, ‘The Sreemad Bhagavata’, from the Great Sage ‘Sukka’. The Snake King Taskhyaka was saved by the Sage ‘Astika’ and Pariskhita got ‘Moskhya’, living behind his mortal body for Taskhyaka to perform the curse. It is believed to be the beginning of a new ‘Yug’ : ‘Kali’ or ‘Kali Yug’. The sage Astika saved a specie, Snake, from the Earth to be vanished completely !!

Since the beginning of this Millennium, we the Humans and other habitats of this Earth have new curses: Bird flu, Swaine Flu, Anthrax…and the respective Governments in different countries (democratic incarnations of ‘Janamenjaya’?) perfoming the ‘Paskhi Yanjya’ : Mass Culling (Killing) of different species of birds. The slightest doubt on emergence of ‘Bird Flu’ is fetching a mass culling of millions and millions of birds by the human, to save humans, although, in this self-centric human’s era, the life of these birds understood to be for the human, by the human and of the human.

Due to our own exaggerated modernization in urban and rural areas, we have seen some of the Nature’s friends almost vanished from our Earth: Sparrows, Vultures and many. There are conservationist (incarnations of ‘Astika’ ?) doing their part relentlessly to save these species to be found in future only from the fossils.

We are now taking our children to a zoo to show them what a ‘Vulture’, ‘Sparrow’...means to this nature !...Days are numbered …They will take their next generation to zoo to show them what exactly it mean a ‘Murga’ !!

Till last year we hardly saw sparrows in our area. But for nearly a year now, my father has started keeping water for the stray animals / birds under one tree near our house, which happens to be on roadside near bus-stop. Since then we have often seen sparrows alongwith crows, dogs etc quenching their thirst there. Noticing the sparrows, he has started keeping bajri for them to eat. Over the period of time the number of sparrows has increased remarkably.
