There are a large number of sparrows that frequent our garden - sometimes they number about 80 individuals, although usually there are about 40 of them. More sparrows seem to come to feed when there are no other birds around, such as mynahs and pigeons. A few of them nest around the house, although so far they have ignored the nest boxes we have put up.
We feed the sparrows a mixture of 1:1 'kutki' rice and bajra. They also like roughly ground maize. However, they do not like larger grained rice, wheat or 'poowa'. After feeding, the sparrows appear to pull up grass roots and then poke their beaks in the soil. They are also constantly drinking water and bathing (often in groups) in the large bird bath. It is important to put a rock in the middle of a bird bath so that they can reach the water easily for bathing. They also prefer a bird bath that is at least 2ft from the ground.

during the period of 2005 til date many new mobile communication towers were installed after which a fast decrease in the numbers of house sparrowes was noted and at present none can be noticed. there were no new big architectural develoupment

I would like to add a sound file of their chirping for the record as we may sell this house and in the future a mutlistoreyed building may be built which will require the Madhu Matli bush so fondly planted and nurtured by my mother, to be uprooted.
I am sure after this plot is sold the sparrows will loose a very favourite place in this locality.
They are such nice birds and gave such solace and comfort to my dear departed mothers over the years. I am grateful to these gentle birds and pray that they thrive to mkae our world a better place.

Im daily arranging water in small pots for birds and all lil animals as they suffer a lot in this hot summer.

Parvathipuram is my father,s place. So when I am a child I used to watch them almost daily in large numbers. After I got married I went to Madras. I used to visit my parents house along with my son, who is 2and 1/2 years old. He used to amuse himself in front of the mirror. Even the sparrows also do the same thing in front of the mirror. so we used to call him (pichika pilla) a sparrow.
