Since childhood I always liked sparrows.
Even at my home we have ventilators and there they(sparrows) used to build their nests. Even now they have their nests. But, their number has decreased exponentially. We always use to throw some rice or other grains on our roof or ground early in morning or late night so that birds including sparrows will have them early in the morning looking for food.

Yeah it is quite shocking that sparrows have disappeared at such a rapid pace over the period of time. I remember spotting hundreds of sparrows in our courtyard when we were children. Only a decade ago, our mothers used to spread wheat grains on a sunny morning, a flock of sparrows would come flying by and start having its fill. It is so strange not to spot the very bird which had become an integral part of my childhood memories? We must do everything in our power to bring the house sparrows back to our houses.

For last two years a housesparrow family is staying in the terrace of my apartment. It is on the 7th floor and I think they liked the height. The outlet of my hall's AC make good support for holding the nest. The nest was initially built by a pair of purple sunbird (I might be wrong in naming them). My husband tried to help them by putting some newspaper below the nest, but they didn't like the idea much. So they flew away and the sparrow couple found themselves a readymade home to start a family. Several times the eggs and newborns fell down from the nest. We picked the baby birds up and put them back into the nest if they were alive, but not all of them were lucky. I think they laid eggs for at least 2-3 times. Around 3-4 months back, we went out of station for a few days. After coming back, we found that a pegion couple has occupied the nest and laid aggs there. The sparrow-babies must had gorwn up and flew away by then and the sparrow couple had left the nest for a few days. But after coming back when they saw the pegions living there, they didn't leave. They are now friends with the pegions and they have found a hole through which they can go inside the loft and make nest in the flower vases I kept there. But I don't think so far they have made any new nest. I am enjoing their company, but by May-June I am going to move form this place. I don't know whether the new occupant will be bird-friendly or not. All I can do is wish them good luck.
