I tried building a birdhouse with a floor area of about 4 inches . The height can be anywhere from 9 to 12 inches. The simplest birdhouse that I constructed had these dimensions and a single compartment. I also made sure that I had a hinged roof to keep the rain out. The hinges on the roof helped me gain easy access to the inside of the birdhouse if ever you need to do some cleaning. There I made an access hole as well. This can be around 32 mm in diameter – that’s around 1.2 inches. I tried playing around with this figure and reach up to about 2 inches, or 50 mm. For a birdhouse with a height of 9 to 12 inches, the hole should be placed somewhere along the 6th or 7th inch from the floor. Atlast one fine day in a friday afternoon sparrows occupied those tiny little compartments and made them their dwelling places without paying me any rent lol .....

I see them in my colony sometimes and sometimes on my kitchen balcony too. Unlike the pigeons, these birds are very timid and quiet. They are darn intelligent creatures too. Love them! :)

we were camping near this village Dhamasana in Gandhinagar district Gujarat. In march month of 2010 I observed two sparrows which used to come to drink water and play in front our wash basin situated outside my camp. We were very happy and took many photographs of these two sparrows.

I used to visit my Grand Mother's house during summer holidays and during afternoon when everyone was asleep it was the sparrows that kept me company and played with me. I used to chase them in an affectionate way but never try to catch or hurt them. even now, whenever I see a sparrow, I remember my childhood.
