I grew up in a small town called Mokokchung in Nagaland where, i remember, sparrows in very large number were found in the church buildings where they had made the space between the roof and ceiling, their abode. I have also seen a lot of these sparrows in the campus of the University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan, Himachal Pradesh, where i spent four wonderful years. During my second year at IARI I stayed at shishir hostel. The sparrows could been seen making their nests in the spaces on the walls or inside the ventilators of our hostel rooms. Somehow, these humble birds are now being slowly replaced by pigeons.

I live in this house and the house sparrows are nesting almost every year for last 6-7 years. At the moment there are 2 pairs nesting over my grill one in a nest box made by a conservation volunteer and another behind the grill. One more pair is trying to build the nest in a ventilator over the door which remains closed. Today I saw them fighting with a pair of Red vented Bulbul who apparently were there to find a nest location in a creeper where they had nested in the past also once. They use the grass blades and twigs and other material from Gul Mohar (Delonix regia) and Neem( (Azadirachta indica) tree growing outside the boundary wall.
I will report the number of chicks were added to the population on successful completion.

During 1990 - 2003 there were a huge number of sparrows in my locality. They came to my house. I used to feed them. I was a kid. Then I moved to other state for studies. After 4 years I returned back. Suddenly one morning I just noticed that there were no sparrows in my house or the locality. I thought about this several times. Last I saw was in 2005. After returning home in 2009, number of sparrows reduced to mere 1 or 2 and now its zero!
