Paldi, adjoining the Sabarmati River/Sardar Bridge Paldi Ahmedabad Gujarat
Every sundown one can spot a wave of little birds flying across the campus lawns chirping hysterically. This is always a surprise for a newcomer, and many rush to the lawns armed with their cameras.
Perhaps because the campus is a green oasis in an otherwise dry, rather industrial landscape, it is teeming with wildlife. It is not unusual to spot dozens of sparrows in bamboo thickets and other shrub around the buildings. The more adventurous ones build nests right in the building.
Traditional architecture in Gujarat had Pols- a cluster of houses around a courtyard, and invariably a Bird house in these courtyards. There are still many in the old city, which attract a large number of pigeons but this is a vanishing feature in the suburbs as the city expands, and engulfs most of its green spots.
Perhaps its high time we looked back into the past, and did some rethinking and reviving!
