I remember during our school days a very famous summer activity was to find out discarded shoe / chappal card board boxes. Make a small hole and keeping it in the verandah.
Within a week we could have a Sparrow couple nesting in these boxes and chirping around.
At that time we used to see Sparrows around every nook and corner, I rarely see a group of sparrows at the same place now, Occasionally we can only see a single sparrow here and there.
