When I first came to live in the area in 2000, there few houses and many sparrows. However, in the past 12 years, the sparrow population has dropped, even as the number of houses has gone up. We now even have apartment blocks in the area.
I started putting up simple nesting boxes in 2004, made with dahi matkas in my verandah and with this encouragement, the sparrows began returning to the area. I now have 5 such nesting boxes, each of which have each had multiple broods each season in the last 8 years.
