Q11. Would you like to share a story about House Sparrows from this time period?I live at DSK Akashganga in Aundh, Pune. It is an 8 yr old residential complex. House sparrows are seen here in small groups of 10-15. My parents once told me that they haven't seen the house sparrow in their native place, Amravati (Maharashtra) from last five years. Also, I don't find any contribution about the information of sparrows from Amravati region. What could be the reason? During my childhood days, I loved the sparrows who would often come inside the house without any fear. But now a days these birds seems to be afraid of humanbeings. When I came to know about the extinction of sparrows, I decided to do something to save these little creatures. Earlier I kept bajra grains for the birds but it attracted mainly the pigeons. So I started keeping rawa for the sparrows. After few days I saw the sparrows visitng my balcony daily. I've also seen them collecting nesting materials. I've kept a small earthen pot for feeding them water. My day begins with the sweet chirping of these birds and I enjoy their visit the whole day. I've clicked a few snaps and videos of these birds to treasure for my grandchildren if in case they get extinct ! Last month I saw a sparrow sitting quietly for long time in my balcony. I felt as if it was not well. That evening my daughter who was playing downstairs told me that a sparrow just fell down. I immediately rushed with a bowl of water. But it was too late. The little bird had passed away. I was hurt. Don't know what could be the reason. Could it be sunstroke? I have built a bird house recently from a box which I bought from the nearby grocery shop. We have an open piece of land behind our society where lot of trees like babul, neem and grasses have grown which makes it a kind of green belt. Also there is a 'Mula' river behind which makes a good habitat for the birds. Other birds like the bulbul, maina, sunbirds, robins visit my balcony daily. Every year the scaly breasted munias build their nest between the potted plants in my balcony. It's a wonderful sight to see them nesting.
