| Q11. Would you like to share a story about House Sparrows from this time period? | At the rear of Lahore Apartment & with the boundary with Naval Apartment, there is a decorative Bamboo cluster. About 30 sparrows either live in the cluster or they congregate at this point from colonies around i.e. early mornings to 9am. One of the known reasons appears to be that one or two senior ladies spread”Bajra”& stale bread crumbs for the feast of sparrows nearby in Vasundhera. Secondly, fortunately this place is not raided by pigeons in larger number to elbow out little sparrows.
REVIVAL or CONSERVATION
To my mind as a lay person, following steps can help in reviving this one living part of the Household.
1. As modern Architecture cannot be altered for the sake of poor sparrows, some small suitable ordinary bird houses may be installed at a location on the house exterior which may be safe from predators. Infact I had seen on a TV program, A sardarji from Delhi only, had fixed simple empty canes on his house walls and Balcony in such a manner, that it was inhabitated by sparrows. Unfortunately that time I could not record the address or details. I am confident that arranging ordinary metal 1 kg size old canes shall not be difficult.
2. Somehow Pigeon population will have to be controlled. They occupy nesting places, outnumber & elbow out sparrows with their sheer size and aggressive feeding.
3. Bird Lovers in colonies should impart awareness and arrange for fixing Bird houses or empty canes.
4. Elderly one especially ladies should shoulder their age old gesture of kindness by feeding sparrows for “Good Luck”.
5. During vacations/ school holidays, a photo competition for young children be organized by schools as a hobby where only birds/ sparrows are photographed, under different moods, angles, activity etc. This will involve next generation for respecting & loving Mother Nature & environment. |
