Q11. Would you like to share a story about House Sparrows from this time period? My observation on the present situation of house sparrows A question has been raised whether house sparrows are disappearing due to atmospheric changes as a result of pollution and radiation from mobile towers installed on the roof of multistoried buildings in towns and cities in India. The question also points out that the sparrows which usually like to live safely in the ventilators existing in the old types of building are now facing difficulties to nest in the new types of building due to the absence of ventilators in them. The major question before me whether sparrows are disappearing in towns and cities in India. As a nature lover I would like to say there has been some decrease in number of house sparrows. Of late however it has been appear to me that the situation has changed to some extent. I have noticed that the sparrows have found some other places suitable for nesting, like behind the rain pipes, electric meter boxes etc. In regard to the first question the cause for the process of reduction of sparrows can yet to be attributed to the radiation. But the process of some reduction can obviously due to non availability of suitable space for nesting of such birds under new rules of urbanization. There has been a continuous fight for existence in this universe, so in the case of sparrows. These small birds are trying new places for their alternative homes. I have noticed that some house sparrows have entered into the kitchen of our sixth floor flat through windows and built their nest in a small space beside the wooden cabinet where several generations of the sparrows have come up within a period of time. As a result there has not been any noticeable reduction of the house sparrows in the area around my house which is situated at Chetla in Kolkata. I am afraid this process of finding alternative nesting places of the house sparrows may not be easy in course of time because most of the people will not allow the birds to nest inside their houses and kitchens. This bird which does not build their nests on the trees will have to live with man by building nests in the houses in the new situation for their survival. So man must come forward and do something to help in the survival of these beautiful birds. 13.6.12 Sagnik De Sagnik.de86@gmail.com Biswarup Housing Society Flat No 6J 1 Dwaraka Nath Gosh Lane Kolkata 700027
