The area could have easily supported hundreds of sparrows, but I guess the following are the reasons for such a small sparrow presence:
1.The college campus nearby is much more attractive for nesting.
2.Foraging opportunities are great in the adjacent paddy fields.
3.The quarters area was dominated by mynahs and jungle babblers among other birds.

My grandparents' big house had so many ventilator windows and there used be nests in every one of them. We loved the birds. But, once a sparrow got killed by the ceiling fan blade and I was feeling so sad I still remember it.
