Nests were a regular feature in our garden and in the niches of our house. We often saw sparrows feeding the young. And as school children it was quite exciting to 'rescue' the occasional baby bird.
In a nearby house, there were Jack Fruit trees which used to be full of sparrows. So much so that it used to be difficult to hear anything else beyond the chirping in evening. That sound is lost now.

Sparrows were still present but were fewer in numbers than before. The number of nests had gone down.

During this period i started observing a noticeable decline in the number of sparrows. We laid out grains and water for birds but all that remained untouched for days together.
Nests, that were a regular feature earlier were also nowhere to be seen.
