Swarnamala Sirsi -
Manasagangothri campus University quarters park Mysuru Karnataka
Even though the university campus has vast open spaces with tree cover, I never observed a single sparrow since 1979 till today. Also, this area does not have a single tower in its vicinity.

when we came to live in this newly developed residential area in 2002 which used to be an agricultural field, I used to see a couple of sparrows chirping and hopping around. They made me nostalgic and I desperately wanted them to keep visiting my backyard.I started putting out a plate full of rice and a bowl of water on the terrace. They were very cautious at first and then started feeding from the plates. Their numbers increased day by day and at one point of time I counted 5 dozen sparrows sitting on my terrace and the balcony of my neighbor. I requested my immediate neighbor not to use pesticide in their garden which they obliged. Now I have a bird feeder(which my daughter has sent from Canada) in the corner of my small garden and a water bath which the sparrows use everyday. Recently I have procured three nest boxes and have installed them on the wall and hope they will start using them. Even as I type this I keep hearing the happy chirping of at least a dozen sparrows in my backyard. I have taken many photos which I will be uploading shortly.
