GARDANIBAGH, PATNA, BIHAR Jakkanpur, Gardanibagh Patna Bihar
This particular area is my Grandfather's residence. It is in fact a large bungalow, the kind of house, which can accommodate joint families of more than twenty persons. As a child, I used to go there during summer vacations. The bungalow had good amount of greenery--- small and big plants. There were guava and grapes plants. Lot of creeper plants like pumpkins etc. Many varieties of flowering plants like Jasmine, lily, Rose, Marigold and so many of them. In short, enough to keep the air, pollution free and birds happy. Due to urbanization and heavy doze of technology, this kind of vegetation can be found in society parks only, not at individual residences these days.
During those days the sparrows could be seen anytime of the day and in large numbers. We as children had enough time to watch birds in those days, unlike todays's overburdened children. Besides trees, the sparrows used to make their nests inside the home, in the upper hole of the ceiling fans. As the mother sparrow would bring some food in her beak to the nest, all her 3-4 little ones started to shout chee-chee-chee from the safety of their nests, showing their tender pink beaks and head. They all wanted to have the food from the mother sparrow at the same time. It was a beatiful sight, we used to watch everyday.

O.N.G.C. COLONY, GOKULDHAM, GOREGAON, EAST Gokuldham, Goregaon East Mumbai Maharashtra
I lived at the O.N.G.C. colony from 1983 till 1991. We had two balconies, in the flat of the apartment. Those were beautiful mornings. I cannot say whether the over active sparrows waited for me or I waited for them, in the mornings. And yes, they turned up in the evenings as well. It was fun to feed them and watch their movements. There was lot of vegetation in the campus of the colony and we could also see their nests occasionally.

I do not see any sparrows here now. Rather there are pigeons, which can be seen.

Here I am talking about a location, which is my parents residence since 1985. The colony was newly built then, and I used to visit along with my children during summer vacations. It was fun to observe large number of sparrows and feed them grains of rice early in the morning. My children were small and loved watching the birds- so many of them.
My parents still live at the same place and I go there quite often. But I do not find as many sparrows now. Rather, there are pigeons in large numbers.
The area is well populated, with increased number of cars and of course mobile phones. There is nice vegetation as well.

O.N.G.C. COLONY Vadodara Gujarat
I have lived at O.N.G.C. colony of Makarpura road from 1992 till 2008. Previously there were a fair number of sparrows, which could be seen at the balconies, in the parks, in the golf ground. But slowly the number had reduced considerably. I used to wonder, where have they gone. I heard it from people, that it is the usage of mobile phones in large numbers, which is causing harm to the tender sparrows. I feel sad to hear that. If something can be done to save the species, it must be done.
